As a Manufacturing Engineer within the Hardware-Operations organization, you will lead the introduction of our autonomous vehicle at a contract upfitter during a critical period of rapid production ramp. This multidisciplinary role requires a self-sufficient professional capable of integrating mechanical and electromechanical systems into a high-volume manufacturing environment. You will serve as a vital technical bridge, frequently coordinating with Technical Program Management, Supply Chain, Quality Assurance, and Production teams, both internally and externally, to ensure design intent is understood and operationally executed at scale.
This role is based on-site in Pittsburgh with up to 50% regional travel in the Detroit Metro area. Standard work days will be Monday through Friday. There will also be occasional weekend work depending on business conditions.
In this role, you will
- Quickly come-up-to speed on new technologies and engineering challenges
- Conduct multidisciplinary rapid problem-solving activities and propose solutions to both prototype and production manufacturing challenges, such as Design for Excellence (DfX) input, e.g., Design for Manufacturing (DfM), Design for Assembly (DfA), Design for Cost/Procurement (DfC/DfP), Design for Inspection/Test (DfI/T), Design for Service/Repair/Maintenance (DfS/R/M)
- Create manufacturing models (parts, assemblies) and drawings to support process design and development.
- Create shop drawings to clarify design intent; document and annotate tooling.
- Create and maintain work instructions, standard operating procedures, forms, records, checklists, process sequence/routing, Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), PFMEAs, and other required manufacturing documentation
- Prepare and maintain detailed layouts of buildings, workcenters, and equipment
- Work with Program Managers to support development and execution of APQP-compliant program plans
- Support and guide the manufacturing team through all phases of Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP); particularly the later phases associated with designing and developing the manufacturing process and validating the Process / Product (i.e., MSAs, production trial runs, Run @ Rate, PPAPs, control plans)
- Lead or participate in Kaizen activities to ensure continuous improvement in processes, products, components, raw materials, and equipment
- Communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
- Coordinate the manufacturing launch of new/revised products including establishing goals, training team members and evaluating results
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 3 years of prior relevant experience;
- Or, Advanced Degree in a related field and a minimum of 2 years’ experience.
- Or, 12 years of prior relevant experience in lieu of a degree
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience with IATF 16949:2016 Automotive Quality Management Systems or similar, e.g., AS9100D:2016; ISO 13485:2016; ISO 9001:2015
- Green Belt certification or demonstrated experience using Lean / Six Sigma tools and similar methodologies, e.g., DMAIC, 8D, PDCA, QRQC, 4A.
- Knowledge of and experience with AIAG’s Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) approach
- Experience with advanced CAD and PLM suites
- Experience in interpreting and creating technical drawings, datasheets, schematics, and system specifications
- Experience in developing and extracting requirements
- Experience in leading root cause corrective action investigations
- Experience in creating training material or teaching/training
- Basic electrical engineering knowledge such as basic circuit analysis
- Basic mechanical engineering knowledge such as tolerance stack-ups
The base salary range for this position is $112,000-$180,000 per year. Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
